The
Umatilla Chemical Depot opened in 1941, but no chemical weapons were there until 1962, over 50 years ago in the midst of the cold war constantly threatening to become a hot war. Once the US decided to destroy them as a result of signing the
Chemical Weapons Convention, the Army decided to incinerate them, over much protest from
Environmental groups. The incinerator was completed in 2001. The Army began weapons disposal on September 8, 2004 and completed disposal on October 25, 2011, and now the last remains are
being demolished. Let's hope they never come back.
